In addition to seeing your primary care doctor, you can also visit a specialist who treats thyroid disorders, called endocrinologist. Because you only have a limited amount of time with your doctor on each visit, help prepare. Use this list of questions to guide your exam, and make sure you learn everything you can about your hypothyroidism and your treatment. Women are not men to achieve this condition. You may have developed hypothyroidism if a disease or surgery damaged your thyroid gland and prevented you from doing enough of your hormone. The causes of hypothyroidism include: The treatment you receive for hypothyroidism will depend on how low your thyroid hormone level has decreased. Doctors usually treat this condition with a form made by the man of thyroid hormone called levothyroxine (Levothroid, Levoxyl Synthroid). Once your thyroid hormone level stabilizes, you will have tests once every six months to make sure it is still in the right dose. Most people take this drug every day. Ask your doctor for specific recommendations. Your doctor may suggest you take this medicine in the morning when your stomach is empty. Having food in your stomach can prevent your thyroid hormone from absorbing completely. Some medicines and supplements may interfere with the absorption of thyroid hormone. It is usually recommended to take levothyroxine four hours before or after taking these. If you forget a dose, it's better to take it as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. It doesn't bend in the dose. Several different brand names and generic versions of thyroid hormone replacement are available. However, it is a good idea to remain in the same medicine. Although all these medications contain the same active ingredient, they may also contain different inactive ingredients that may affect your treatment. You may need to be in the thyroid hormone for the rest of your life. But the dose could change over time, depending on the hormonal levels. When you take thyroid hormone at the recommended dose, you should not have many side effects. Because hypothyroidism slows down your heart rate, suddenly jumping into an exercise program could be dangerous. You may need to wait until your thyroid hormone level stabilizes. Ask your doctor when you can start exercising again, and how to safely start a new routine. Treatment is especially important during pregnancy. Untreated hypothyroidism can be dangerous for you and your baby. In pregnant women, low thyroid hormone levels can cause anemia, preeclampsia, congestive heart failure and postpartum bleeding.
