Avoiding Complications Many hospitals have developed checklists to prevent NG tube-related complications. Any complication that occurs should be reported in a critical incident form. The position of the tube should be revised after cough or vomiting, as they can migrate. The authentication of the epigastric region after air failure through the tube (the "whoosh" test) is not reliable for a pH strip to be used to confirm the correct intragastric position (Stock et al, 2008). The blue lithmus paper cannot distinguish between bronchial and gastric secretions, so it should not be used to verify the correct position of the tube. Confusing and unconscious patients may not show respiratory difficulty even if the tube is in the respiratory tract. It may not be easy to differentiate between bronchial secretions and stomach contents without checking the pH. To avoid false negative results, pH strips should be kept clean during storage and gastric aspirated syringe should not be put back on the syringe deck (, 2007a). For guidance on confirming the correct position of NG feeding tubes in infants, children and adults, practitioners should consult the NPSA (2005) orientation (see Fig 4 for adults). When NG tubes are used to feed, care should be taken when administering medicines. in error (Stock et al., 2008). NPSA (2007b) recommended using specifically designed NG syringes, which are incompatible with equipment IV. Conclusion The correct intragastric position of an NG tube must be verified by checking the acid pH aspiration of 5.5 or lower (NPSA, 2005), and by an X-ray if necessary.
